Garbage and Recycling Collection as of August 2, 2016:

Garbage and recycling is collected on Tuesday mornings East of Bridge Street and Thursday mornings West of Bridge Street. Items to be picked up must be placed at the curb BEFORE 7:00 a.m.

Waste Management honors the following holidays. Your garbage pick-up will be delayed one day later after these holidays:

New Year's Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day

Garbage is collected by Waste Management and must be placed in special bags. The bags are sold in packages of 10. The cost is $10 for a package of 33 gallon bags and $5 for a package of 16 gallon bags. The bags can be purchased at the City Center, Swift Hardware, Surplus Outlet, Jim's Foodmart, Econo Foods and Wal-Mart.

Beginning August 2, 2016 the City of Houghton will be launching our residential curbside recycling program:

  • Waste Management will be using a split-stream truck which accepts both trash and recyclables in different compartments. They have ordered a special new truck to do this.

  • Waste Management will deliver the recyclables collected to a recycling facility.

  • Everyone needs to be aware of what can be recycled and how to prepare your recyclables. Please read and attached pdf list of what can and cannot go into the recycle bin and how it needs to be prepared.

  • A lot of the things not accepted curbside can be recycled elsewhere. The link below will bring you to the Copper Country Recycle/Reuse website for other information.

  • In an effort to get things off to a good start, the City will be making a one-time initial supply of 250 "City of Houghton" recycling carts available to residents at a one-time fee of $10 per cart, which can be added to your water/sewer/trash bill the next month. You will own the cart. They will be delivered to your residence on a first come, first served basis until they are gone. One per household. Multitenant properties, please contact the City. Dependent on shipping the carts may or may not be available for the first pickup.

  • City residents will still be able to use the Waste Management drop-off site on Enterprise Drive, but now it will be free of charge; with proof of residency. The cost of this service is included in our contract.

  • Once the residential program is up and running, the City and Waste Management will begin working on options to bring commercial recycling to Houghton as well.
