Recycling Information

Recycling is available in the City of Houghton through Waste Management. They accept the following items free of charge at their Houghton center.

Recycling Hours:

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday: 9 am - 3 pm
Thursday: 9 am - 7 pm
Saturday: 8 am - 2 pm

Acceptable Items
  • Office Paper (any color, photocopy, printer/laser, notebook, legal, fax, shredded is OK if placed in plastic bag)
  • Envelopes (labels & windows OK, white, pastel, interoffice, brown, envelopes with string closure)
  • Magazines and catalogs
  • Newspapers and inserts
  • Telephone books
  • Post-it notes
  • Junk mail (unopened OK)
  • Paperback and hardcover books
  • Soft cover computer manuals
  • Manila file folders
  • White box board or card stock
  • Soft drink or beer cartons
  • Cereal box type cardboard
  • Paper bags and other brown bags
  • Plastic bags (grocery store bags)
  • Grade paperboard, boxboard, egg cartons
  • Dark colored accordion files
  • Corrugated Cardboard
  • Plastics #1 and #2 only
  • Metal cans, tin cans, jar lids and foil products

* FLATTEN ALL CARDBOARD BOXES
* Remove all paper clips and staples
* Small amounts of tape are OK

Unacceptable Items
  • NO plastic transparencies, photographs, fluorescent bond
  • NO metal spiral or plastic ring bindings
  • NO candy wrappers or chip bags
  • NO pizza boxes or other food containers
  • NO Tyvek or padded envelopes
  • NO paper towels, napkins, or tissue paper
  • NO dark colored hanging files
  • NO carbon paper
  • NO wax paper
  • NO paper ream wrappers (most are plastic coated)
  • NO sytrofoam or other packing materials
