Covid-19 Response

The City of Houghton has made operational changes to comply with Governor Whitmer’s Covid-19 executive orders.  Most city employees are considered essential employees and continue to work.

The City office is closed to visitors, but we continue to work our regular hours and answer the phone at this time.  Payments can be made by mail, by credit card on our website, or left in our drop box next to the front door.

Council and commission meetings are being held by teleconference.

Houghton Transit continues to run the demand bus Monday – Friday from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm.  The Downtowner Bus runs the usual route Monday – Friday from 10:00 am until 12 noon.  We have taken measures to keep our bus drivers safe and we are limiting the number of passengers allowed on the bus to keep passengers as safe as possible.  Buses are also sanitized every evening and cleaned throughout the day.

Trash and Recycling continue to be collected on the usual days and times (weather permitting).

We ask that all residents stay home and stay safe as much as possible. If you do go out; please take the appropriate precautions, be smart, and respect others in their personal precautions.

Public restrooms will be open starting Memorial Day Weekend. Please continue to take the necessary precautions and familiarize yourself with the signage in place.

The playgrounds and picnic areas will be made available starting Memorial Day Weekend as well.

Park users, please be advised:

Due to the extraordinary circumstances we find ourselves in we must remind everyone that using the park and equipment or allowing your children to use the equipment is AT YOUR OWN RISK.

The park itself and playground equipment are not routinely cleaned or disinfected.

If you or your child are sick or have been exposed to COVID-19, please do not use the equipment.

If you have any reservations about the cleanliness of the equipment, do not allow your child to use it.

Please take appropriate precautionary measures such as washing hands, using hand sanitizer, etc. before and after using the equipment.

Please be aware of and use social distancing practices.

We recognize persons have different comfort levels about using public spaces. Please use your discretion in how you use, or allow your child to use, the equipment – and respect others in their personal choices for themselves and their families.
