Boating & Docks

Houghton’s waterfront provides an incredible opportunity for boaters. With docking and launching facilities available, local day-use boaters, fishermen, and Lake Superior cruisers can spend a day on the water or tie up for an extended stop.

The boat launch west of the lift bridge requires a small fee that can be paid at the kiosk located near the launch. The City maintains a free parking lot for boat trailers which is located under the lift bridge. There are several fishing piers along the waterfront for those who prefer to fish from shore.

A seasonal kayak/SUP launch is located in Bridgeview Park from May to October.

Transient cruisers and day-use boaters are welcome to use any broadside mooring along the waterfront.  Most mooring provides no amenities and is free.  However, the new Pier provides electrical service and payment is requested at the kiosks located on the Pier.  Most broadside locations are relatively deep water and will generally accommodate sailboats. Following are those primary docking locations open to boaters:

  1. Any broadside along the 500 foot long wood pier west of the lift bridge
  2. Bridgeview Park
  3. The new Pier east of the Portage Lake District Library provides 350 feet of broadside mooring.
  4. East Houghton Park

For extended stays (up to 5 days) – please contact the Houghton Police Department and provide your name, phone number and hull number in case of emergency.
