Employment Opportunitues – Seeking Seasonal Watering Employee, Full Time DPW Employee, Part Time Parking Enforcement Officer

Seasonal Watering Employee
Looking for a part-time, fun, seasonal gig and some extra cash? Do you love plants? Are you self-motivated? Do you mind light weeding once in a while? The City of Houghton is seeking someone to be our seasonal, part-time watering person for some of our gardens downtown and around the city.
We are looking for a friendly person who doesnโ€™t mind getting up early. Your typical workday would be over before 10:00 am. You are also an ambassador for Houghton by default as you are working in and around the public and are often called upon to answer questions.
Typical day:
  • Pick up watering truck at public works garage.
  • Fill the tank with water and fertilizer.
  • Water downtown pole baskets every day (unless itโ€™s pouring).
  • Water other areas on a 1-3 day schedule
  • City welcome signs
  • Large bowl planters
  • Some of the in-ground gardens throughout town.
  • Pull weeds here and there as they pop up.
  • Return truck to garage.
Work starts late in May and is done by early October. You work approximately 3-4 hours per day for 20-24 hours per week. Some weeks the hours may be more or less, depending on rain/weather as you donโ€™t need to water when it rains. You will need to do the Shelden Avenue loop early before morning traffic starts up, and are willing to come out on a weekend here and there to keep things from drying out. We are hoping for someone steady throughout the summer, but we can work around some time off. A valid driverโ€™s license is a must.

If you want to join our team, please fill out an application. Applications are also available at the City of Houghton Office, 616 Shelden Avenue in Houghton. If you have questions, you can call us at 906-482-1700. The City of Houghton is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
